To find out more about fashion, have a walk along the city centre’s Nationalestraat and “MoMu” is difficult to miss: the breathtaking building houses the Fashion Museum, the Flanders Fashion Institute and the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. It dates back to the 19th century and was originally designed as a storehouse for the clothing company “New England”. It was renovated in 2000 under the guidance of Belgian architect Marie-José Van Hee and includes a covered passageway and a wooden staircases made from rare wood.
The museum opened its doors in 2002 and is now visited by thousands of fashion devotees each month. The “MoMu” is a popular museum because of the popularity of the Antwerp Six, a group of designers that gained world wide eminence after graduating in the early eighties, and made Antwerp’s fashion famous. To buy Antwerp Six fashion, be on the look-out for their shops at the shopping street “Meir” and the surroundings of the “Kammenstraat”.
